Kiel (dpa / lno) - The education and science union has criticized the planned opening of primary schools and daycare centers in parts of Schleswig-Holstein on Monday.

In an open letter to Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU) that became known on Thursday, the GEW state vice-president Katja Coordes wrote of an unnecessarily high risk for employees.

"Neither in daycare centers nor in elementary schools can the necessary distances be maintained for educational reasons alone."

As a rule, FFP2 masks and ventilation devices do not provide adequate protection.

Coordes referred to the spread of virus variant B.1.1.7 in Flensburg.

"Especially here, but also in other parts of the country, more and more teachers who are deployed in emergency operations or in attendance in final classes are very worried about their health because of current developments."

The return to class must be done carefully.

According to a survey by the union, 85 percent of the members in the daycare centers did not feel adequately protected.

Even with low incidences, the GEW calls for groups in daycare centers to be halved and only alternating lessons in primary schools.

What is needed is a test strategy suitable for everyday use for educators, teachers and students.

Apart from the cities of Flensburg and Lübeck and the districts of Schleswig-Flensburg, Pinneberg and the Duchy of Lauenburg, daycare centers and primary schools will open again on February 22nd.

Face-to-face lessons are planned in primary schools, the daycare centers are switching back to regular Corona operations.

In the secondary schools, however, for grades 5 to 13 until March 7th, distance teaching remains.
