After a day of hearing, the Algerian justice demanded the death penalty against Abdelmalek Hamzaoui, the main accused tried for the assassination of the Niçois Hervé Gourdel, a mountain guide kidnapped and beheaded by jihadists in September 2014 in Algeria.

First questioned by the president of the court, Abdelmalek Hamzaoui, 36, denied having participated in the assassination of the guide and affirmed that he was accused to "complete this case and please the French".

Fourteen people prosecuted in this case

"I have a lot of trouble talking about [Hervé Gourdel], we are still in shock, but I remember that there are a lot of inconsistencies in the words of the main accused", declared the companion of the victim, Françoise Grandclaude, who came from France.

A total of fourteen people are being prosecuted in this case.

In addition to the eight suspected kidnappers, six other people are on trial for failure to report a crime.

The prosecution requested three years in prison and a fine of 100,000 dinars (620 euros) against each of the six defendants.

Failure to report crimes is punishable by up to five years in prison.

During the debates, four of them formally recognized Abdelmalek Hamzaoui as one of the kidnappers.
