Algiers (AP) - Algeria's President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has announced the dissolution of parliament and an early election.

In addition, the cabinet should be reshaped within 48 hours, said the head of state in a TV address.

A "fundamental change" must lead to institutions of which there is no doubt.

The next election should be free from corruption.

Tebboune also promised the release of detained activists.

The announcement comes shortly before the second anniversary of the start of the mass protests that led to the overthrow of long-term ruler Abdelaziz Bouteflika in 2019.

Algeria's National People's Assembly was last elected in 2017 and thus still under Bouteflika's rule.

The next election would actually be in 2022.

In the past few days the pressure on the government had increased again.

At a protest in the north of the country, demonstrators called for a democratic Algeria and the overthrow of the «regime».

In chants they spoke out against corruption.

Tebboune was elected head of state in December 2019.

The protest movement sees him, however, as part of old clans.
