Hamburg (dpa / lno) - Hamburg is upgrading the bicycle parking spaces at rapid transit stations.

In the past year, almost 1200 new parking spaces were created, so that there are now a total of 23,470 bike + ride spaces in the Hanseatic city, according to a response published by the Senate on Thursday to a small request from the coalition groups of the SPD and the Greens.

1900 new bicycle parking spaces are planned for this year.

By the end of the legislature in 2025, there should be around 28,000, 5600 of which should then be permanent rental spaces.

"In addition to the significant plus in terms of quantity - with around 1200 new parking spaces in parking facilities every year - the quality has also improved significantly thanks to more covered or rentable spaces for secure accommodation," said SPD cycling expert Lars Pochnicht.

The occupancy rate, which has risen from 77 percent in 2018 to 80 percent, “encourages us to continue the expansion program we started nine years ago”.

The green mobility expert Rosa Domm referred to the various service offers for the parking spaces.

"Bikes or expensive e-bikes for the daily commute can be stored in permanently rented, roofed boxes in a theft-proof and weatherproof way or, if required, parked on the free bicycle racks."

In addition, there are now 274 lockers with space for bicycle helmets and outdoor jackets.
