Erfurt (dpa / th) - Especially in the larger Thuringian cities, people left their sports clubs last year.

Among other things, in Erfurt, Gera, Weimar and Suhl, but also in Eichsfeld, the sports clubs have lost about seven to nine percent of their former members, said a spokesman for the State Sports Association (LSB) of the German press agency.

Some of the losses are due to the effects of the corona crisis.

With another part of the losses, a direct connection with the pandemic is not recognizable.

Sports clubs in rural areas of the Free State had the lowest membership losses, the spokesman said.

In the Hildburghausen district, in the Saale-Orla district and in the Ilm district, the corresponding minus in 2020 is less than two percent.

During the spring lockdown and also during the current lockdown, sports clubs had to discontinue their training offers across the board - at least when people usually meet in person.

In some clubs, online training is now offered as a replacement.

However, such digital training is hardly possible, especially in contact sports.
