Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The work of the state-owned “Climate and Environmental Protection MV” foundation established in connection with the construction of the controversial Nord Stream 2 pipeline is planned for at least 20 years, according to the foundation chairman Erwin Sellering.

"Of course we also established the foundation to finish building Nord Stream 2," said the former SPD Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania of the "Ostsee-Zeitung" (Wednesday).

He assumed it would be another year before the pipeline is ready.

In the long term, the focus will be much more on environmental protection projects.

The US threats of sanctions for sellering are contrary to international law.

"Because the pipeline will be built according to current German law."

The threat posed by the USA is particularly affecting large, internationally active companies that have to fear that they will no longer be able to do business with US companies.

The foundation will step in so that the smaller companies, especially in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, can continue to work on the pipeline.

In dealing with Russia's human rights, Sellering advocated a critical dialogue with the Kremlin leadership.

“But I think it's completely wrong to see this country as an enemy.

Russia can be a good partner for us. "

Anyone who makes observance of human rights and morals the sole yardstick for economic and political action would have to say goodbye to many partners.

Meanwhile, the foundation continues to take shape.

A full-time staff structure is currently being set up, which will include a managing director, a press officer and a project manager, Sellering told the "Ostsee-Zeitung".

The goal is for the team to be up in spring.

There are already 50 applicants, the positions are also advertised nationwide.
