Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - Demonstrators blocked the main entrance to the State Chancellery in Düsseldorf on Wednesday.

They called for an end to lignite mining on the Lower Rhine.

The Extinction Rebellion group supported the protests.

According to a police spokesman, everything went off peacefully at first.

The operation of the government headquarters is not endangered.

The police are on site with a contingent.

The demonstrators called for the demolition of the villages threatened by the open pit to stop.

"Act at last in accordance with scientific findings, give up the chumship with the coal companies and end the destruction of land and culture in the Rhineland!", It said in the direction of the state government.
