Pokljuka (dpa) - Arnd Peiffer has secured the first redeeming medal for the German biathletes at the Biathlon World Championships in Pokljuka, Slovenia.

The sprint Olympic champion won the individual silver medal without shooting errors.

After 20 kilometers in the difficult classic, the 33-year-old from the Harz region was 16.9 seconds behind the new world champion Sturla Holm Laegreid from Norway, who also got through without a penalty minute.

Third, in Johannes Dale (1 mistake), another Norwegian made it onto the podium in the most difficult of all biathlon races.

For Peiffer it is the second World Cup medal in individual.

The five-time world champion had already won gold in Sweden two years ago.

Overall, it is the 17th World Cup medal for the most experienced athlete in the German team.

In the pursuit, Peiffer's 20th place was the best result.
