Berlin (dpa / bb) - There are sugar-sweet offspring at Zoo Berlin: At the beginning of the week, the gorilla family grew by one young.

For the first time in 16 years, a little gorilla was born in Berlin, as the zoo announced on Wednesday.

Both the baby and the 24-year-old mother Bibi seem to be doing well: "We are really relieved that the offspring appear fit and that the gorilla mother is taking care of her young animal," said zoo director Andreas Knieriem.

Bibi spent the first nine years of her life in a gorilla family in the Netherlands and thus had the opportunity to observe her conspecifics handling young animals and to learn from them.

The other gorillas should also show keen interest in the newcomer.

The family includes the elderly Fatou, who at 63 is the oldest gorilla in the world.

However, the care of the baby is exclusively a matter for the mother.

For Knierim, rest and restraint are the top priority in this sensitive early period - the baby gorilla can only be right that the animal house is closed anyway due to the corona pandemic.
