Kiel (dpa / lno) - Schleswig-Holstein's Environment Minister Jan Philipp Albrecht wants to stop species extinction and initiate a trend reversal.

On Wednesday, the Green politician presented the first cornerstones for a new strategy to preserve biological diversity in the country.

"Every day a piece of nature dies in our beautiful state," he said.

"The diversity of species is dwindling, the number of insects is falling."

A real trend reversal is required to safeguard biological diversity.

"A new biodiversity strategy should show the way for the coming decade."

According to Albrecht, 48 percent of the country's animal and plant species are currently on the Red Lists of Endangered Species, and the trend is rising.

According to the minister, the focus of the strategy is on the preservation and development of habitats for animals and plants.

For typical landscapes such as coasts, moors, heaths and bodies of water, goals and measures are described and, above all, their networking is promoted.

The renaturation of moors and the development of forests should also have positive effects on climate protection.

The aim is to establish a good ecological status on 30 percent of the land area, said Albrecht.

By 2030, at least 15 percent of the state's area should be able to act as a protected area and biotope network system.

Two percent of the land area is to be left as wilderness areas to a largely self-dynamic and undisturbed development.
