Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Unexpectedly good business in December brought the Baden-Württemberg construction industry a stronger increase in turnover than forecast last year.

Thanks to double-digit sales gains in the last month of 2020, total sales rose by 3.3 percent year-on-year to 14.6 billion euros, as the State Statistical Office announced on Wednesday in Stuttgart.

At the end of January, the Baden-Württemberg construction industry association had forecast an increase of just 2 percent for 2020 as a whole - the basis for this were the figures available up to November and empirical values for business development in December.

An association spokeswoman said on request that they had now been surprised by the strong December sales.

The driver of the construction industry in the past year was residential construction; increases in revenue in this area offset the corona-related declines, especially in commercial construction.

The medium-term outlook is not rosy, however.

Because incoming orders, an important indicator for business in the future, collapsed - according to the state office by 8.2 percent to 11.0 billion euros.

In the worst case, the south-west construction industry expects a drop in sales of around 2 percent for the current year.
