Waren (dpa / mv) - Employees of the Waren municipal building yard virtually “freed the Müritz from the ice” on Wednesday: With a special chainsaw, large pieces of ice were cut out at the Volksbad on the north bank, so that a 40 meter long channel was created.

"This is to protect part of the footbridge from the enormous pressure of the ice," said Jörg Felgner, who is responsible for the city building yard.

When the huge ice sheet thaws, enormous thrust forces are generated, so that the ice sheets can shear or crush jetties or boat sheds - especially if there is also wind.

"This time we mainly cut the new disabled access at the Volksbad free," said Felgner.

This has several stainless steel elements that are particularly at risk.

When it rained, one employee sawed carefully while another secured him.

Another man pushed the thick plates under the rest of the ice with a grappling hook.

The channel was marked with bundles of reeds.

Frost down to minus 16 degrees had caused the Müritz - the largest inland lake in Germany with an area of 117 square kilometers - to freeze over about ten days ago.

The thickness of the ice is 10 to 20 centimeters, also on the other large Mecklenburg Upper Lakes.

On the weekend, many ice skaters, ice anglers and ice lovers enjoyed the unusual hiking opportunities.

Now rising temperatures and rain have thawed the snow on the ice.

Authorities are again urgently warning against entering.
