Bamberg (dpa / lby) - Cross-border commuters from the Czech Republic and Tyrol have needed a certificate to enter Bavaria since midnight.

The Bavarian Ministry of the Interior wants to announce on Wednesday morning how many systemically important companies may continue to employ commuters from neighboring countries.

The certificates from the district offices and independent cities are intended to facilitate controls at the Bavarian borders.

Researchers warn of the long-term consequences of the border closings.

"There are signs of a transformation of the economy in the border region, and key achievements of the past 30 years are at risk due to the border closings," says Patrick Reitinger from the University of Bamberg.

He is leading a research project that examines the effects of the border closure on the economy in the Bavarian-Czech border region using the example of the Wunsiedel district in the Fichtelgebirge.

At some companies, commuters from the Czech Republic could continue to work from home.

"Other companies that rely on the presence of their employees are considering reducing the proportion of Czech employees in the long term and thus making themselves more independent of commuters from the Czech Republic," explained Reitinger.

Normally around 1500 cross-border commuters work in the district of Wunsiedel in the Fichtelgebirge.

According to its own statements, the district office has now classified 73 companies with 475 cross-border commuters as systemically relevant.

The Czech Republic and Tyrol are so-called virus mutation areas.

Since Sunday, only Germans and foreigners with a residence and residence permit in Germany have been allowed to enter from there.

There are exceptions for health workers, truck drivers and other transport personnel in freight traffic.

You have to register digitally and show a negative corona test at the border, which must not be older than 48 hours.

Since this Wednesday, cross-border commuters also need a certificate from the German authorities, so far the employment contract was sufficient.
