February 16, 2021 New judicial trouble for former US president, Donald Trump, and his lawyer, Rudy Giuliani.

And this time in the name of an old law created to counter the Ku Klux Klan.

Democrat Bennie Thompson, elected in Mississippi, chair of the House Committee on National Security, filed an official complaint against Trump and Giuliani, accusing them of conspiring with the white supremacist groups Oath Keepers and Proud Boys, instigating them to practice the assault on the Capitol, which took place on January 6.

In the civil case, Thompson appealed to a law enacted after the Civil War designed to counter the violence and intimidation of the historic racist organization of the Ku Klux Klan.

If the proceedings were to go ahead, the former president would be at the center of a new trial, which could potentially see witness testimony in court and the discussion of new details related to the insurgency.

Trump has just emerged acquitted of his second impeachment, in which he was accused of instigating the assault on Capitol Hill.

The Senate has not reached the minimum number of votes to indict him.
