Munich (dpa) - The trial against the right-wing extremist terrorist cell "National Socialist Underground" was a mammoth trial.

The higher regional court (OLG) in Munich had been negotiating against Beate Zschäpe and three co-defendants for more than five years until the verdict was finally reached in summer 2018.

The radio play "Hall 101" now traces the events.

Speakers such as Martina Gedeck, Bibiana Beglau, Ercan Karacayli and Thomas Schmauser are involved.

The 24 episodes can be heard from Friday (February 19) at 8:05 p.m. on Deutschlandfunk and Bayern 2 as well as in the ARD audio library.

The radio play is named after room 101, in which the NSU trial took place and in which Beate Zschäpe, the only survivor of the NSU trio, was sentenced to life imprisonment as an accomplice on July 11, 2018, among other things for complicity in ten murders and particularly serious arson.

Her co-defendants were also convicted.

The NSU murdered a total of ten people in Germany between 2000 and 2007.

The radio play is like a collage, based on 6,000 pages of minutes that court reporters from ARD wrote down on each of the more than 400 days of the trial.

Under the direction of Ulrich Lampen, 24 episodes were created, each 30 minutes long and in which speakers present the transcripts.

Statements from witnesses, relatives of the victims or experts can be heard as well as from representatives of the federal prosecutor's office or the court.

When selecting the quotes, one did not proceed chronologically, announced the Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR), under whose leadership the project was created.

Rather, statements were linked that were thematically related to put together a picture like a mosaic.

The creators wanted to give insights into the thinking of the terror cell, show the path of radicalization and the life of the terror cell underground.

Their supporters, the role of the protection of the constitution, the investigations and the strategy of their defenders in court are also discussed.

The episodes will be presented on the radio and in the podcast by presenter David Mayonga.
