Schwerin (dpa / mv) - In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, 86 churches have so far been supported in their renovation work from the state's strategy fund.

They received 8.5 million euros from the 2017 fund, as the chairman of the CDU parliamentary group, Wolfgang Waldmüller, said on Tuesday in Schwerin.

The fund is fed from the country's budget surpluses from the past good years.

The opposition criticizes him because they see him as a "playground" for the members of the government groups SPD and CDU.

The CDU has set the support of church renovations as a focus in the strategy fund, said Waldmüller.

Churches and mansions are the defining buildings of many villages and small towns in the country.

There are currently just under 40 projects still being processed.

By the end of the legislative period, around 120 churches would then be supported with a total of 16 million euros in important renovation work.

The total investment in the projects is between 25 and 30 million euros.
