Potsdam (dpa / bb) - The orange civil defense helicopter (ZSH) "Christoph 35" took off in Brandenburg for 1309 missions last year.

This emerges from the operational balance sheet of the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Aid (BBK), which was published on Tuesday.

The statistics are led by helicopter "Christoph 29" in Hamburg with 1651 missions and "Christoph 17" in Kempten with 1500 missions.

According to the information, the federal government maintains a fleet of 18 orange-colored helicopters, which are used daily from twelve air rescue centers nationwide.

Civil defense helicopters transported 4031 patients in a total of 14 039 missions across Germany in 2020.

Compared to the previous year, the number of assignments decreased slightly.

In 2019, the helpers had to take off for 14,816 missions.

One reason was the corona pandemic.

"Mobility has decreased significantly in the past year and the accident statistics of the Federal Statistical Office also confirm that the number of traffic accidents has decreased significantly," said the Vice President of the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK), Thomas Herzog, on Tuesday in Cologne.

Fewer accidents meant fewer operations for the air ambulance service.

According to the BBK, every civil defense helicopter flies a team that includes emergency doctors from the respective ward hospital.

The emergency paramedics, who are specially trained for air rescue, are provided by the aid organizations and professional fire departments.

The federal police dispatch the pilots.
