Nuremberg (dpa / lby) - The number of overnight stays and arrivals in francs fell by almost half last year.

According to the Tourism Association of Franconia, only 13.3 million tourists stayed overnight in 2020, compared to 23 million in the previous year.

That corresponds to a minus of almost 42 percent.

The number of guests fell last year by almost 50 percent to 5.3 million.

According to the association, the cities suffered particularly badly from the Corona crisis.

In Nuremberg, for example, 1.5 million people stayed overnight in 2020, a decrease of almost 58 percent compared to the previous year.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Erlangen, Fürth and Würzburg also recorded drops of more than 50 percent in overnight stays.

In the holiday regions such as the Franconian Lake District, the Altmühltal Nature Park, Franconian Switzerland and the Rhön, the summer went well, emphasized the former association chairman and interior minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU).

But that would not have compensated for the losses in spring and autumn.

The loss of sales amounted to around 2.56 billion euros from May to September 2020 in all of Franconia.

The highlights of this year will be the 800th birthday of the city of Ansbach, the 100th edition of the Mozart Festival in Würzburg and the 75th birthday of the Bamberg Symphony, said the new association chairman Gerhard Wägemann.

On the anniversary of “1700 years of Jewish life in Germany”, Franconia will also deal with its Jewish culture.
