February 16, 2021 Where there are activities suspended by law it is right that there is a block on layoffs, but elsewhere we must leave the labor market free to restart.

This is the position expressed to the Minister of Labor Andrea Orlando, by Maurizio Stirpe, vice president of Confindustria, present at the meeting by videoconference with the general manager Francesca Mariotti.

"As for the priorities to be addressed in the short and medium term - Stirpe declared - the first need is to reform the shock absorbers. We have been talking about this for a long time, we presented our proposal on July 16, 7 months and we have not yet had the opportunity to discuss it. "

"In the coming days we will send our point of view again because the reform of the social safety nets is strictly connected to the blocking of layoffs. On this aspect - he specified - we need pragmatism and an empirical approach. Where there are still activities because the government decides to stop them it is right that there is a block on dismissals, just as it is correct that there is the recognition of management costs and the deferral of tax and contribution charges. But where there are no conditions for suspension by law, but a reduction in activities due to market - said Stirpe - we must allow companies to reposition themselves, to restart the labor market ".

Furthermore, "if we tackle the problem of the reform of the shock absorbers, we will also finally be able to tackle the issue of citizenship income which does not give any answer in terms of active policies. It would also be useful to review some distortions caused by the Dignity decree regarding the fixed-term contract, mitigating those aspects that risk blocking the employment recovery in sectors particularly affected by Covid such as services ", concluded the vice president of Confindustria.
