Tokyo (dpa) - Japan's economy continued its recovery in the final quarter of 2020.

According to preliminary data from the government in Tokyo on Monday, the world's third largest economy, ahead of Germany, grew by 12.7 percent over the year.

In the previous quarter, Japan's GDP had already increased by 22.9 percent.

It was the first time in three quarters that the country's economy picked up again after Japan slipped into a severe recession in the wake of the corona pandemic.

In relation to the entire calendar year, Japan's economy shrank by 4.8 percent.

That was the first drop since a 5.7 percent slump in 2009.

Experts expect it will take years for the Japanese economy to fully recover from the effects of the global pandemic.
