Rostock (dpa / mv) - The ice off Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's coast is up to 20 centimeters thick in places.

The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) announced on Monday that there is 5 to 20 centimeters thick, coherent to dense ice near Stralsund.

In the fairway to Wolgast, in the bay south of Darß or in Greifswald harbor, there are ice thicknesses of this type with different densities and strengths.

According to the BSH, there is contiguous, 5 to 15 centimeter thick ice in the Rostock city harbor and further towards Warnemünde.

From the seaport in the direction of the Baltic Sea, the water is mostly ice-free.

In the Wismar Bay there is also ice 5 to 10 centimeters thick, sometimes dense.

The BSH expected further ice formation on Tuesday night.

From Tuesday, temperatures above freezing point and southerly winds would in some cases cause a rapid decrease.

In some places only a slight decline in ice is to be expected.
