Kamenz (dpa / sn) - Drought and late frosts caused significant losses in the aronia harvest last year.

As the State Statistical Office announced on Monday, the total yield was only 17 tons.

This means that just under 100 kilograms of the dark berries were harvested per hectare; the average harvest over the past six years was just under 1.7 tons per hectare.

Chokeberry was grown on an area of 180 hectares last year and is therefore considered the most important Saxon bushberry.

Fewer berries were harvested overall in 2020: the total harvest was 408 tonnes, 27 percent below the previous year's result.

In some cases, the berries were completely dried up and entire areas under cultivation were not harvested, it said.

In addition to drought and late frosts in spring, mice have also troubled the populations.

According to statistics, there are 45 farms in Saxony that grow bush berries on at least 5000 square meters - besides aronia, currants and blueberries are among the most important crops.
