Hamburg (AP) - coach Maik Machulla from the table leader SG Flensburg-Handewitt calls for so-called intelligent game days in the handball Bundesliga.

Several away games of a team in a region should be combined and completed within a week.

"You have to sit down at the HBL and talk about it: How can you optimally organize it so that we don't travel so much unnecessarily?" Said Machulla as spokesman for the Bundesliga coach on Sunday evening in the "Sportclub" of NDR television.

This should give the professionals more freedom to regenerate.

Machulla: "As coaches, we also have to manage to distribute the stress in such a way that we don't destroy the players."

Extreme examples are THW Kiel and SG Flensburg-Handewitt, which have to play several catch-up games in the Bundesliga and Champions League due to Corona cancellations.

The THW has 43 games to play in 127 days, Flensburg has 39 games to play in 134 days.

That means: a game around every three days.

“That is of course amazing,” said Kiel's team doctor Detlev Brandecker in the “sports club”.

"That is basically not justifiable from a medical point of view."

The players are also responsible, “that they assert themselves there and no longer take part in this magic,” said Brandecker.

Machulla also wants to know why Bundesliga clubs can continue to play when they have a Corona case on their team, but handball teams have to be in 14-day quarantine.

"These are things that we are keenly interested in how something like this can work."

If the handball clubs could handle it that way, "that would greatly alleviate our scheduling problem," said Machulla.
