The dredging work on the so-called meeting box for large seagoing vessels in the Elbe between Wedel and Blankenese has been completed.

The waterways and shipping department announced on Monday in Bonn that the fairway had been widened to a length of eight kilometers to 385 meters.

This means that seagoing vessels up to an added width of 104 meters could nautically pass each other there safely.

So far it has only been 90 meters.

Until the completion of the deepening of the Elbe, there is still remaining work to be done, for example obstacles would have to be removed or compensation requirements under nature conservation law ended.

"The expansion of the meeting box has made the Elbe even more attractive for international shipping," said the President of the General Directorate for Waterways and Shipping, Hans-Heinrich Witte.

More ship's width means time savings and better planning.

This ensures an effective and easy flow of traffic.

For Hamburg's Senator for Economic Affairs Michael Westhagemann (independent), an important first step in deepening the Elbe has now been completed.

"This is a real benefit for shipping, since the transports, especially those of the particularly wide, large container ships, can now be handled much more quickly and reliably."
