Melbourne (AP) - Top favorite Serena Williams reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open with a show of strength.

The 39-year-old American defeated Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus 6: 4, 2: 6, 6: 4 in the round of 16 on Sunday in Melbourne.

Williams, who is aiming for her 24th Grand Slam title in Melbourne, turned her first match point after 2:09 hours.

In the quarter-finals, the long-time number one in the world will meet the winner of the duel between Simona Halep from Romania and Iga Swiatek from Poland.

Before Williams, the Japanese Naomi Osaka and Hsieh Su-Wei from Taiwan had already made it through the round of 16 at the first Grand Slam tournament of the tennis season.
