Melbourne (AP) - US Open Champion Naomi Osaka has reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open.

The world number three from Japan won on Sunday in Melbourne against last year's finalist Garbine Muguruza from Spain with 4: 6, 6: 4, 7: 5.

The 23-year-old fended off two match balls in the third set with a score of 3: 5 and then made the victory after 1:55 hours in the first attempt.

In the quarterfinals, Osaka, who won the title in Melbourne two years ago, will now face Hsieh Su-Wei from Taiwan.

The 35-year-old had no trouble at all in her 6: 4, 6: 2 against the Czech Marketa Vondrousova and is in the quarter-finals for the first time in one of the four Grand Slam tournaments.

Never before since the introduction of professional tennis in 1968 has a player made her quarter-final debut at a Grand Slam tournament older.
