Dresden (dpa / sn) - The expansion of cycle paths on federal highways in Saxony is making slow progress, according to the left.

"Anyone who wants to cover longer distances by bike in Saxony for sporting, ecological or other reasons often lives dangerously because there are no bike paths of their own", stated the East Saxon member of the Bundestag Caren Lay.

She called for a binding expansion plan.

Lays' inquiry to the Federal Ministry of Transport shows that there are cycle paths on 754 of 2310 kilometers of federal roads in the Free State.

That is a share of almost a third.

However, several sections are also used by other road users such as pedestrians.

There are pure cycle paths over a length of 280 kilometers and thus on around 12 percent of the federal road network in Saxony.

"The measly balance of cycle paths on federal roads is a testament to the poverty of the federal and state governments in terms of transport policy," complained Lay and called for a faster expansion.

If construction continues at the current pace, there will only be a cycle path on all local federal roads in 2111, she said.

However, the ministry's response also shows that more cycle paths were built on federal highways in the past year than in previous years: a total of 49 - compared to 11 in 2019 and 15 in 2018. At the same time, the state government has set itself the goal to strengthen cycling.

"We will create the conditions for doubling the proportion of journeys made by bicycle in Saxony by 2025," says the coalition agreement between the CDU, the Greens and the SPD.

To this end, the planning and construction of cycle and cycle highways should be promoted.

"In the future, a cycle path will be built when building new state roads."
