Munich (dpa / lby) - Drivers on Bavarian motorways were stuck in traffic on around 46,450 kilometers last year - a decrease of 36.8 percent compared to the previous year.

This was largely due to the Corona restrictions in force from March, said the Bavarian Ministry of Transport at the request of the SPD member of the state parliament Markus Rinderspacher.

At the same time, drivers had to wait a total of 21,813 hours on Bavaria's autobahn in 2020.

That would correspond to an increase of more than 40 percent compared to 2019.

A ministry spokeswoman named a system for evaluating the data and the type of traffic jams during the pandemic that was changed last year as possible causes for this discrepancy.

"As an example, the corona-related border controls can be mentioned, in which road users sometimes stood for a very long time," said the spokeswoman.

According to the information, car and truck drivers were stuck in traffic jams for a particularly long time on Autobahn 3 with 4964 hours.

On the route between the Suben border crossing and Passau alone, there was a standstill 749 times last year.

The A3 remained “Germany's number one traffic jam highway” last year, the ADAC also announced in its traffic jam balance for Bavaria.

The reason given by the traffic club was corona-related border controls and the test center that was set up on the A3 in the summer.

According to the Ministry of Transport, drivers on the A9 were stuck in traffic jams for the second longest in a Bavarian comparison with 3515 hours, followed by Autobahn 8 with a duration of more than 2700 hours.

According to the ministry, the main causes of downtime are accidents and construction sites.

According to the ADAC, the traffic jams in Bavaria in 2020 were significantly longer than reported by the ministry: According to this, drivers were slowed down over 105,876 kilometers by traffic jams or slow traffic - a decrease of around 43 percent compared to 2019. The reason for the differences between the two balances ADAC and the ministry named different data sets.

The ADAC and the SPD member Rinderspacher called on the state government to modernize the railway infrastructure to avoid traffic jams.

"The sheet metal avalanches on the Bavarian motorways are the result of neglected rail traffic," said Rinderspacher.

While he mainly called for a relocation of goods traffic, the ADAC warned "a reliable and attractive offer" for local and long-distance passengers.
