Auckland / New Zealand (dpa) - A corona outbreak in Auckland has stopped the challenger final of the America's Cup sailing classic for the time being.

After Italy's cup hunters had also won races three and four in the final of the challenger round against Great Britain on Sunday, the next race day had to be postponed on Wednesday.

The organizers announced this decision on Sunday.

Previously, New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern had ordered a provisional level 3 lockdown for the city and a level 2 lockdown for the rest of the country.

Three cases had occurred in a southern suburb of Auckland.

As a result, schools, public institutions and the America's Cup village were cordoned off by the authorities for at least 72 hours.

New Zealand has so far successfully countered the pandemic with tough lockdowns.

Entrants - and thus also the members of the America's Cup teams - had to undergo strict two-week quarantines.

The pandemic appeared to be controlled in the island nation by this new outbreak, which is why tens of thousands of fans gathered in the New Zealand summer.

The Prada Cup final was now interrupted with a score of 4: 0 for Patrizio Bertrelli's Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team against the British Ineos Team UK around sailing star Sir Ben Ainslies.

The team to record seven wins first will challenge New Zealand in the America's Cup.

This will start on March 6th.

For the first time in the 170-year history of the America's Cup, the Challenger Final is a purely European matter.
