Nuremberg (dpa) - The city pigeons also suffer from the closed shops and restaurants.

You will find less leftover food to pick up.

Animal rights activists now fear starvation.

The German Animal Welfare Association therefore demands that municipalities allow controlled emergency feeding with species-appropriate grain feed during the lockdown.

In Nuremberg, for example, the volunteers from the animal welfare association for city pigeons and wild animals are allowed to supply the birds with grain feed at six places every day.

The city has given them an exemption from the general ban on feeding.

However, it is forbidden for everyone else to feed city pigeons.

There are also such regulations in Cologne, Kiel and Braunschweig.

These and a few other cities set a positive example, says Lea Schmitz from the German Animal Welfare Association.

"Most of them stick to the feeding ban."

These include, for example, Hamburg and Munich.

In winter, the beer gardens and street cafés are always closed, so that the pigeons would find less leftover food, according to the city of Munich.

"A particular emergency is therefore not apparent."
