On Saturday, former US President Donald Trump welcomed the failure of the Democrats' efforts to convict him on charges of rebellion and incitement to storm Congress during the approval of the victory of the incumbent President Joe Biden on January 6, an incident that left chaos.
"Our historic, patriotic and beautiful movement to make the United States great again has just begun," Trump declared in a statement.
"In the coming months, I have a lot to share with you, and I look forward to continuing our wonderful journey together to achieve American greatness for our people as a whole," he added.
Trump said the Senate trial was another phase of "the largest campaign of persecution in the history of our country."
This came after the Republicans in the US Senate thwarted the efforts of their Democratic opponents to convict Trump on charges of inciting his supporters to storm Congress.
57 members of the council supported Trump's conviction, while 43 members were rejected, which means that the two-thirds majority required to convict the former president is not available.
Seven of the 50 Republican senators joined the United Democrats in the House in favor of the conviction.
Expected result
It was expected that Democrats would fail to convict Trump, after US Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell revealed hours earlier that he would vote against the conviction.
"I'm voting for the acquittal," McConnell wrote in a letter to his colleagues - reported by the media.
Despite the vote against the conviction, Mitch McConnell harshly criticized Trump, saying he was "responsible" for the January 6 attack on the Capitol.
"There is no doubt that President Trump is responsible, practically and morally, for sparking the events of that day," McConnell said in a speech after the vote.
He described Trump's actions that led to that assault as "disgraceful dereliction of duty."
Trump's trial lasted 5 days in the same building that his supporters stormed on January 6, shortly after they heard him deliver a inflammatory speech.
Trump's defense team says that the trial before Congress is illegal because Trump has left power, and that his speech among his supporters is protected by guaranteeing the right to freedom of expression guaranteed by the US Constitution.
