In Spain, the members of the polling stations are appointed, following a drawing of lots, and only a few rare cases such as pregnant women over eight months or the elderly are exempted.
For others, not showing up on voting day is an offense punishable by a heavy fine and even imprisonment.
But in the midst of a
pandemic
, for the Catalan elections of this Sunday, February 14, when the summons arrived at the homes of the designated, a real sling began.
In total, 25,000 people, or 30% of them, contested their appointment, most of them for health reasons.
The region therefore had to urgently appeal to others, ensuring that strict measures would be respected during the ballot, but some of the members who were refused their challenge now threaten to attack the authorities in the event of contagion.
They especially fear the moment when the positive cases of Covid-19 - who have the right to vote - will present themselves before them.
