Oberammergau (dpa) - Despite the sometimes sluggish vaccinations and worries about new Corona variants, Oberammergau does not see the Passion Play next year at risk.

"We are optimistic that the Passion Play can take place as planned in 2022," said the press spokesman and Jesus actor Frederik Mayet.

“There is currently no plan B.

But of course the municipality of Oberammergau will reassess the situation at the end of 2021. "

The amateur play of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus was canceled due to the corona pandemic last year.

Now it should come on stage next year.

Around 450,000 spectators from all over the world are expected.

From Ash Wednesday onward, almost all actors have to grow their hair and beard, following tradition.

Rehearsals for the actors should start again in December.

For the musicians it starts in October.

The premiere should be in May next year.

«I am very optimistic that in 2022 we will return to a largely normal situation.

And I'm looking forward to rehearsing together and visiting guests from all over the world, ”Mayet told the German Press Agency.

The games go back to a plague vow.

In 1633 the people of Oberammergau promised to perform the story every ten years if no one dies of the plague - which, according to legend, no longer happened.

Mayet also sees the postponement of the Passion almost four hundred years later due to a new pandemic as an appeal to action.

«I think solidarity and mutual standing up for one another should become more important again.

Basically, however, I think that the preservation of creation and active action against climate change is the most pressing issue of our time. "

The parallels between the pandemics also gave us a new look at the origin of the Passion Play.

“I don't want to compare Corona with the plague in terms of danger, but you still get a feeling for what epidemics mean.

The fear of something invisible, intangible.

And today, just as it did 400 years ago, it means one thing above all else: isolation. "
