Potsdam (dpa / bb) - Women in Brandenburg should be better protected from violence.

The corona pandemic "seems to exacerbate violence against women," said Minister of Women Ursula Nonnemacher (Greens) on the occasion of the international day of action "One Billion Rising" "(" One billion rises ") on Sunday.

"Together with the federal government, we will therefore expand shelters and advice centers for women affected by violence and their children in the state in the coming years."

According to the Ministry of the Interior, a total of 2,856 reports of domestic violence were recorded in Brandenburg between February 28 and September 23, 2020.

That was 24.2 percent more than in the same period last year.

Nonnemacher appealed to women who suffer violence at home: “Domestic violence is no reason to be ashamed.

Get help! "

The state equal opportunities commissioner Manuela Dörnenburg said in a statement that acts of violence against women must be consistently named and condemned.

Measured against the stipulations of the Istanbul Convention, Brandenburg has too few places in women's shelters for women affected by violence.

According to the agreement, one family room must be provided for every 10,000 inhabitants - but half of the places are missing so far.

The “Märkische Allgemeine” reported on Saturday in cooperation with the research network Correctiv.Local of 125 rooms for women and children in need in Brandenburg, 126 were missing.
