Waren (dpa / mv) - Permafrost has now also allowed the Müritz - the largest inland lake in Germany - and the adjacent large lakes to freeze over.

The ice on the 117 square kilometer Müritz is about 10 and 15 centimeters thick, as Olaf Schatzki from the water and shipping office in Waren announced on Friday.

Because of the strong easterly wind until a few days ago, there could be thinner and occasional vacancies.

In the past few days the wind had subsided, the temperatures dropped to minus twelve degrees at night.

Together with Kölpinsee, Fleesensee and Plauer See, the Müritz forms the Mecklenburg Upper Lakes, which all have the same water level.

Many ice skaters have been romping around on the flat Kölpinsee in Waren for over a week.

However, authorities repeatedly warn against underestimating the risk of break-ins.

The thickness of the ice under the snow is difficult to estimate.

The strong easterly wind had also broken the first ice and pushed it together on the east bank of the Müritz.

The big lakes only really freeze over when there is permafrost and little wind, most recently in 2018.

In the case of ice thicknesses of 30 centimeters or more, ships, piers and boat sheds are cut free so that the ice pressure does not destroy them.
