"Defense Secretary (Lloyd) Austin supports President (Joe) Biden's intention to close Guantanamo Bay and plans to be a partner in this process," Kirby quoted TASS as saying.
He noted that "however, this is a multi-level task with many factors."
“It is important to ensure that we ensure our national security regarding the fate of the detainees,” added Kirby.
Earlier, White House press secretary Jen Psaki confirmed the plans of the US administration to close the special prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.
