Warendorf (dpa) - Before the start of the decisive Olympic qualification tournament, national coach Hagen Stamm sees the German water polo players in the role of outsiders.

"The chances are maybe 10 to 20 percent," said the 60-year-old of the German press agency.

"But they are not zero and we have to take that with us positively."

From Sunday on, his team will play with a large group from Spandau 04 and OSC Potsdam in Rotterdam for the last three starting places for the Olympic Games in Tokyo, which have been postponed by a year (23 July to 8 August).

The group opponents are the host Netherlands at the start, France, Russia, Romania and the third place in the World Cup Croatia.

If the qualification is successful, Germany would take part in an Olympic water polo tournament for the first time since 2008.

The worries that the summer games could not take place in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic are ignored by Stamm.

“If we want to go to Tokyo, then we have to believe that Tokyo will take place,” said the Berliner.

"For the boys it is a lifelong dream to play the Olympics one day."
