The future Nantes Métropole express bike network -

Nantes Métropole

  • To develop the use of the bicycle, Nantes Métropole wishes to create an express network, which will be 642 km long.

  • The first 50 kilometers of structural axes will be completed by the end of the mandate.

Not secure enough, not easily readable, too discontinuous ... These are the criticisms sometimes heard in Nantes about cycle paths.

In an attempt to further develop the use of the bicycle (the metropolitan area's objective is to achieve 12% modal share by 2030), the metropolitan council adopted, this Friday, the deployment and structuring of these routes.

"By 2026, 50 kilometers of high-level cycle lanes will be created to allow

efficient cycling trips throughout the territory", indicates Nicolas Martin (EELV), vice-president in charge of the soft mobility file.

The first stage of a future metro express bike network, which will be 642 km long.

The map, drawn up by a design office, shows three levels of tracks.

The first, called main axes (in black on the map), will stretch over 150 km and will link the various municipalities but also the city center, in a spider's web.

“There will be track numbers, like the Chronobus lines, with a visual identity,” announces Nicolas Martin.

Velotaffeurs will appreciate these clean and secure site trails.

Some 162 km of axes called “structuring” (in red), also separated from automobile traffic, will complete this network.

And to reach them, the metropolis plans to develop 330 so-called “secondary” km (in orange and yellow).

The chosen axes soon known

For the moment, this project is still at the study stage.

“They will allow elected officials to decide, by mid-2021, on the erection of the 50 kilometers of masterful routes.

The chosen axes will be the subject of time for consultation and discussion.

The most advanced reflections are those concerning the links between Nantes and Sautron or Nantes and Carquefou.

The "northern bypass" is also on the rails.

Their delivery date has not yet been finalized.

What regrets the leader of the opposition Laurence Garnier who judges that "the deployment schedule is not precise enough".

At the same time, bicycle facilities (around thirty kilometers) are also planned on the Pornic road or in Bas-Chantenay, as part of the urban project.

The investment dedicated to cycling under the mandate amounts to 115 million euros.
