Schwerin (dpa) - Before the start of negotiations on job cuts at MV Werften, the IG Metall coast reiterated its demand for the shipbuilding companies in Wismar, Rostock and Stralsund to be retained.

"For us it remains crucial that perspective is possible at all three locations at the end of the day," emphasized IG Metall District Manager Daniel Friedrich on Friday in an online press conference.

The union will not support continuation models in which the workforce is the loser.

IG Metall announced protests in Rostock-Warnemünde and Stralsund for the coming Wednesday.

Wismar, where around 500 shipbuilders are currently working on the completion of the giant cruise ship Global 1, will initially not participate.

On Tuesday, the shipyard management informed the employees that around 1200 of the 3000 or so jobs were to be cut.

The slump in cruise shipping as a result of the corona pandemic had meanwhile brought the construction of new ships at MV Werften to a standstill.

The parent company Genting Hong Kong, which took over the shipyards in 2016 to build cruise ships for its own needs, was no longer able to secure the financing.

The shipyards are therefore trying to come under the protective umbrella of the Federal Economic Stabilization Fund.

The completion of two started ships and the continued existence of the shipyards are to be secured with loan guarantees.

It is about loan guarantees of around 500 million euros, some of which have already been approved.

A final decision is expected by the end of March.
