Hagen (dpa / lnw) - Drivers in the Westphalian part of North Rhine-Westphalia will have to be prepared for numerous new construction sites on the motorways in 2021.

The A45 between Dortmund and Frankfurt remains one of the focal points.

"Five of the nine top projects for which construction is planned to start this year are located on the Sauerland line," said the Hagen branch of the federal autobahn GmbH on Friday.

As part of the six-lane expansion of the A45, three major bridge construction projects are starting this year in northern Hesse, and another new bridge is being built in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The Landeskroner Weiher viaduct south of Siegen (380 meters long / 40 meters high) is being replaced here.

The other new construction sites: On the A1, the expansion will continue to six lanes.

The areas between Münster-Süd and Ascheberg north of the Kamener Kreuz and in Lower Saxony between Bramsche and Lohne / Dinklage are affected.

A new viaduct is being built near Unna.

On the A31, the lane between Bottrop and Dorsten will be renewed.

In the Recklinghausen and Herne area, bridges will be demolished and rebuilt on the A43 for the expansion of six lanes.

At the turn of the year, the state handed over responsibility for the 2,200 kilometers of motorways in North Rhine-Westphalia to the federal government.

Since then, the federal Autobahn GmbH has been responsible instead of roads in North Rhine-Westphalia.

After the restructuring, the competence of the Westphalia branch extends beyond North Rhine-Westphalia.

She is also responsible for motorways in Lower Saxony and Hesse.

Construction sites on the highways in the Rhineland are looked after by the second NRW branch.
