In addition to Khan, three more candidates participated in the elections: lawyer Fergal Gaynor from Ireland, prosecutor Carlos Castresana from Spain and prosecutor Francesco Lo Voy from Italy.

Karim Khan received 72 votes against the minimum required 62. 

“Having received the largest number of votes and an absolute majority of votes of the members of the Assembly of States Parties, Mr. Karim Khan from Great Britain was elected prosecutor of the International Criminal Court for a term of nine years, starting from June 16, 2021,” it was announced at the meeting.

Earlier, the head of the Assembly of States Parties to the International Criminal Court, O Gong Kwon, called on the US administration to normalize relations with the court in order to global fight against impunity.
