Wangerooge (dpa / lni) - bottleneck on the island of Wangerooge: There have been no ferries since Monday due to ice and low water.

Fresh foods such as fruit, vegetables, milk and eggs are slowly becoming scarce.

"Currently we do not fear any major bottlenecks," said Wangerooges Mayor Marcel Fangohr on Friday.

Bread, for example, is less scarce because there are two bakers on the island and the supermarkets also have baking streets.

If the cold weather lasts longer, this could lead to other food becoming scarce - however, the weather indicates relaxation in the coming week.

Fangohr emphasized that the grocery markets took precautions by having the goods flown in.

Groceries should be delivered by plane on Friday.

Bringing all of the food to the island by air freight would, however, increase the prices for the islanders.

Having food flown in is by far more expensive than delivering it by cargo ship.

Wangerooge can be reached from the air with the island planes that take off from Harlesiel in the Wittmund district.

The ferry traffic had been stopped because the east wind was pushing the water out of the fairway, said Fangohr.

Another reason is the ice drift that has formed in the fairway.

But there is still enough durable food, said Fangohr.

This also applies to the fresh shelves with, for example, sausage and cheese.

“You can see that it is getting a little emptier, but you can't talk about undersupply.

You still get something. "

A corona vaccination team should also be flown in to vaccinate people over the age of 80 together with the doctors from the island, said Fangohr.

In addition, ambulance workers and medical professionals would be vaccinated.
