Jarmen (dpa / mv) - In the small town of Jarmen (Vorpommern-Greifswald) a premiere has begun for the northeast: Because of the corona pandemic, the new mayor will be determined for the first time in a purely postal vote.

The first have already submitted their ballot papers, as Vice-election officer Rainer Hardt said on Thursday.

"A good ten percent have already voted."

"The reason for voting by post is the very high incidence", explained Klaus-Michael Glaser from the City and Community Day in Schwerin.

The count is on March 7th.

What is also special is that a successor to the longest-serving full-time mayor of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania - Arno Karp (CDU) - will be determined.

The 72-year-old has been in office in the 3,000-inhabitant city on the Peene River since 1990.

The city representatives Karsten Hagen (CDU) and André Werner (Free Voting Association) as well as Jens Schmölling are available as individual applicants.

Ballot letters can also be handed in on March 7th, but only in the town hall, as Hardt said.

In the city council, which also includes ex-education minister Hans-Robert Metelmann, the electoral community is the strongest parliamentary group with six seats, ahead of the CDU (4), left (2), and an SPD representative.

Jarmen recently had to accept the closure of the last MV grain mill.

The small town is considered to be the center of motoball, a type of football on motorcycles.
