Wurzen / Chemnitz (dpa / sn) - During investigations into the illegal smuggling of Eastern European citizens, the federal police in Wurzen (Leipzig district) searched two apartments and arrested four men.

As the Federal Police Inspectorate in Chemnitz announced, forged identity cards were seized on Thursday.

With the help of such Romanian ID cards or identity cards, people smuggled into the country can register a place of residence and take up employment at citizens' offices or registration offices.

The police are mainly investigating illegal entry and forgery of documents.

34 officers from the Federal Police Inspection in Chemnitz and the Pirna Mobile Control and Monitoring Unit were involved in the campaign.

During the searches, a 20-year-old Moldovan, against whom the search was actually directed, and three 24, 26 and 28-year-old Ukrainians were found.

They are also suspected of violating the Residence Act and of having committed further crimes.

A pre-trial detention order had already been issued against the 24-year-old Ukrainian.

He is to be taken to a penal institution.

An arrest warrant has been applied for against the other suspects.
