Gießen (dpa / lhe) - For many lovers, giving roses is part of Valentine's Day.

But this year, according to the regional council (RP) Gießen, which is responsible for the controls of plant imports at Frankfurt Airport, the corona pandemic is obviously putting a stop to the custom.

Between February 1 and February 8, 63 freight shipments with a total of around 1.64 million roses were checked; in the same period last year there were 178 shipments with almost 17.5 million roses, as the authority announced on Thursday.

According to the RP, the decline in rose imports at the airport could be due to the closure of flower shops in some federal states due to the corona lockdown.

However, it could also have something to do with the lower cargo capacities on board passenger aircraft, since air traffic has also declined sharply.

In addition, many flowers are apparently currently arriving in Germany by land via Belgium and the Netherlands.

Valentine's Day is February 14th.
