Neuss (dpa / lnw) - Authorities warned again on Thursday before entering unapproved ice surfaces.

"The ice is still too thin," tweeted the Neuss fire department.

There is a mortal danger.

Already on Wednesday the Ruhrverband warned of treacherous ice surfaces on dams and reservoirs that could suddenly give way.

The ice layer tears open again and again because of the fluctuating water level.

"Water rises through the cracks and forms a new, thinner layer of ice, which of course can easily break again under stress," it said.

Also for nature conservation reasons, entering the ice surfaces of reservoirs should be taboo, the Ruhrverband continues.

So waterfowl retreated to the last free water holes and reacted very sensitively to disturbances from humans.

The Duisburg water police once again warned against stepping on ice surfaces in the Mittelland Canal and the Weser.

The ice surfaces are sometimes only a few millimeters thick and covered with snow.

"Anyone who breaks in runs the risk of being dragged underwater and not coming to the surface."
