The director of the genome studies program concerned with the Covid-19 pandemic expects that the mutated version of the Corona virus, which was discovered in the British province of Kent, will become the dominant strain in the world.

Professor Sharon Peacock said in an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) that the Kent strain "has invaded the country and is likely to sweep the world."

This strain was discovered in Kent County, southeast England, in September 2020, and quickly spread throughout the country, and became a justification for imposing new lockdown measures in the United Kingdom last January.

The strain moved quickly outside Britain, as it has been detected in more than 50 countries so far.

On the future of combating mutated copies of the virus, Professor Peacock said, "When we defeat the virus or it mutates by itself to become non-malignant, that is, it does not cause disease, we can stop worrying about it."

She added, "But looking into the future, I think we will continue this for years. We will continue this for the next 10 years, in my opinion."

The total number of confirmed cases of Coronavirus in the world is close to 108 million, according to the statistical website "World Meter", of whom more than two million and 367 thousand have died since the outbreak of the epidemic in late 2019.
