Six countries from the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East want to deepen their cooperation.

The background is, among other things, the tensions with neighboring Turkey in the region.

Representatives of Greece, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Cyprus, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia met on Thursday in Athens for the "Forum of Friendship".

The French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian also switched on electronically, the Greek Foreign Ministry announced.

The aim of the meeting is to promote cooperation in the areas of safety, health, energy and the environment in the region from the eastern Mediterranean to the Persian Gulf.

In view of the recent serious tensions with Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said at the opening of the meeting: "We all believe in international law and the law of the sea".

This is the only way to resolve problems and disputes.

Mitsotakis emphasized that the participants did not turn their policies against other states.

The opening of the meeting was broadcast on Greek state television.
