Stuttgart (dpa) - According to a study, the car has become more important for many people in the corona pandemic.

They used it more often than before, spent more money on a new one, but on average drove shorter distances and also less frequently to the workshop for repairs.

These are the results of the “DAT Report 2021” published on Wednesday by Deutsche Automobil Treuhand.

According to this, every fourth car owner has sat in the car more often since the Corona crisis than before the pandemic began.

In large cities the number was significantly higher: here just under a third (31 percent) stated that they had used their car more often than before.

The “DAT Report” appears annually and is based on representative surveys on the attitudes of the population towards the subject of cars and mobility, purchasing behavior and the new and used car market.

According to the results, 64 percent of respondents used their car as often as before the outbreak of the pandemic, and 11 percent got in less.

21 percent also said that they had recently used the bicycle more often, 28 percent walked more often.

On the other hand, only 4 percent more often rely on local public transport.

Two thirds, on the other hand, got on here less often than before or not at all.

According to the study, each car was driven an average of 13,730 kilometers in the past year - six percent less than in 2019. The value has been declining for years, regardless of Corona, even if the effects of the lockdowns and increased home office work certainly leave their mark on the numbers left behind, as the study said.

In April 2020, for example, there was a decrease in average mileage of 25 percent.

The number of repairs to vehicles also fell to an average of 0.44 per vehicle.

In return, the owners had more maintenance work done than in 2019.

According to the study, the average purchase prices for new and used cars rose to new all-time highs of 36,340 and 14,730 euros, respectively.
