Berlin (dpa / bb) - Berlin's schools can now work with the itslearning learning platform free of charge.

The Senate Department for Education announced on Wednesday after signing a corresponding agreement with the provider.

In December and after the end of the Christmas holidays, there were numerous complaints from parents and students about problems with its use of the platform Lernraum Berlin, which was previously the most widely used platform.

In January, the education administration announced that itslearning could also be used.

"The schools have the freedom of choice," said a spokesman for the education administration on Wednesday.

Itslearning is already in use at around 30 Berlin schools.

According to the spokesman, the new state license initially allows 50,000 users to work with it.

From the second half of the year it will be 100,000.

According to the education administration, the platform was developed by students in Bergen, Norway in 1999 and bought by the Finnish company Sanoma in 2019.

According to Education Senator Sandra Scheeres (SPD), the state license for the platform will advance the digitization of Berlin schools.

"Itslearning is a supplement to the Berlin learning space, which we also recommend and expand for further use."

There are around 360,000 students in Berlin.

Because of the corona pandemic, they are currently not in school, but are given “school-guided lessons at home”.

A possible opening of schools was on the agenda at the federal-state consultations on Wednesday afternoon and evening.
